Are design graduates acquiring futures-related skills in their formal design education? This study undertakes an investigation into the integration of futures literacy within design education in the Nordic countries. We analysed 34 programme descriptions and 9 course syllabi from both Bachelor’s and Master’s design programs that are conducted in English. Our analysis provides evidence of the integration of futures-related topics into Nordic design education, as most of the BA and MA programmes studied are future- and sustainability-oriented. At the course level, futures literacy is described as a field that requires a critical stance, and students are introduced to a multitude of frameworks and methods for engaging with futures. The study also reveals insights into the plurality of futures-related concepts currently in use. Ultimately, this study highlights the relevance of futures literacy in design education and presents examples of programmes and courses that have integrated these topics.
