Phosphate‐vanadates of Y, Gd, Lu, and La, formed from powders at 1000 °C, were solid solutions having the structure of either xenotime or monazite. Compositions containing 25–50 mole % , , or exhibited intense blue photoluminescence arising from absorption and fluorescence within the vanadate groups. The fluorescence of phosphate‐vanadates activated by europium was also investigated and is compared to the fluorescence of the corresponding vanadates.
