Recent years have witnessed a growing interest in switched systems due to their powerful capability in modelling and controlling various complex engineering processes. By bumpless transfer control, we mean finding a controller to stabilise a system while avoiding the bumps of the control signal, which has found wide applications in solving the switching control synthesis of switched systems, such as stabilisation, anti-disturbance control, fault-tolerant control, and so on. The survey is dedicated to bumpless transfer control and collects recent advances in various applications and perspectives from different system control directions. First, recent theoretical developments and applications in these fields are summarised. The research motivation, with the aid of an aero-engine control system example and a missile autopilot example, is provided. Second, the insights into switched systems and switching strategies are reviewed. Several key problems associated with bumpless transfer control are discussed. Some recent results for the control synthesis of bumpless transfer are summarised for switched systems. Finally, some open problems and current research activities are discussed to elucidate the potential research aspects.
