In response to a questionnaire most of 60 men alcoholics defined craving in terms of a need or desire preceding drinking, while a few defined it in terms of the anticipated effects of alcohol. Craving is regarded as a label attached to most dysphoric emotional states in alcoholics, which provides them with an acceptable excuse to continue or resume drinking.
