A simple synthesis of 4‐, 5‐, 6‐, and 7‐hydroxy‐ and ‐methoxyin‐doles via cyanoalkylation of O ‐protected nitrophenols by vicarious nucleophilic substitution of hydrogen, followed by catalytic hydrogenation of the (2‐nitroaryl)acetonitriles obtained is described.
