Randomized trial evaluates effects of waste plastic and quarry dust on lateritic soil properties, indicating potential for improved stabilization methods.
Lateritic soil covers a large portion of land and is widely used in construction. These soils can not hold onto moisture and are prevalent in places with little rainfall. To improve the engineering and strength properties of these soils, stabilization of soil can be done by adding some admixtures to these soils. The pulverized waste plastic mainly obtained from water bottles are used for stabilizing lateritic soils. These waste plastics provides an alternative source of waste disposal management. The usage of quarry dust enhances the soil's stability and geophysical qualities. The aim of the project is to determine the effect of adding of different percentages of pulverized waste plastic such as 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5% in the size of 4.75 mm and 2.36mm with quarry dust percentages as 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10% and the combination of the individual percentages in order to improve the properties of lateritic soils. Infrastructure flexible pavement are often laid on clay soils. The index property test such as moisture content, specific gravity Atterberg limit and Sieve analysis were used to classify the soil. Further test done comprise Compaction test, California Bearing Ratio (CBR) test, and Unconfined Compressive Strength (UCS) test. The result obtained from the Compaction test shows the OMC and MDD of the natural soil to be 16% and 1920KN/m3 respectively. The result obtained from the CBR test shows that the CBR increased from 2.8% for the natural soil to 4.2%, 4.6%, 3.5% and 5.7% at Waste plastic and Quarry dust addition of (1QD+5WP), (3QD+3WP), (5QD+1WP) and (7QD + 7WP)% respectively. The result obtained from the UCS test shows that, the UCS increased from 32 ππ/π2 for the natural soil to 59kN/m2, 62 kN/m2, 54kN/m2 and 67kN/m2 at Waste plastic and Quarry dust addition of (1QD + 5WP), (3QD+3WP), (5QD+1WP) and (7QD + 7WP)% respectively. The conclusion from the result shows that the most suitable mix for CBR and UCS is (7QD +7WP)%. From the investigation quarry dust and pulverized waste plastic can be used as an actual stabilizing agent in lateritic soil. stabilization for utilization in pavement subgrade.
