Epithelial ovarian cancer is common in older women and is usually fatal. But there are grounds for optimism: widespread use of effective diagnostic staging, more aggressive surgery, and improved postoperative management. Most patients require further first-line treatment plus a second-look operation. Platinum-based chemotherapy after initial surgery seems to offer the best prognosis.
