Alloys 2219 and Ce-added 2219 (Al-6.3Cu-0.3Mn-0.15Zr-xCe) with Ce content no higher than 0.8 wt.% were fabricated by casting. To improve their mechanical properties, a process involving homogenizing treatment, friction stir processing (FSP), hot rolling, and solid solution followed by peak aging (T6 heat treatment) was used. Ce addition led to the formation of Al 11 Ce 3 and Al 8 Cu 4 Ce phases in the 2219 alloy. FSP effectively fragmented the network-structured secondary phases and promoted their uniform distribution. Ce-containing phases and Ce solution atoms respectively refined the matrix grains and enhanced the aspect ratio of θ″ phases in the 0.3% Ce added alloy during T6 treatment. As a result, this alloy exhibited satisfactory mechanical properties. Meanwhile, excessive Ce addition results in the constitution of abundant Al 8 Cu 4 Ce phases that captured numerous Cu atoms. Consequently, the reduced densities of θ″ phases and numbers of Cu solution atoms weakened the mechanical properties of the high-Ce-content T6 alloys.
