Purpose Artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a critical tool that possesses capabilities to automate and optimize resources and costs. The information technology (IT) sector is among the earliest and most eager adopters of AI in the workplace since most technological innovations originate within the information technology (IT) sector, and AI integration can significantly boost productivity and performance. However, aggressive AI adoption can lead to burnout among IT employees. Therefore, this study identifies and ranks the factors that contribute to IT employee burnout due to AI adoption. Design/methodology/approach An extensive literature review identified factors driving IT employee burnout resulting from aggressive AI adoption, aligning them with the technological, organizational, and environmental dimensions of the TOE framework. These factors were then modeled using Grey Influence Analysis (GINA) to handle uncertainty and complex causal relationships without data loss. Findings Increasing job demands, emotional resource drain, and performance pressure emerged as the most significant factors leading to IT employee burnout due to AI adoption. In contrast, social isolation, loss of autonomy, and unclear roles were found to be the least significant factors. Research limitations/implications The study's general IT context may limit its applicability to specialized sectors. Originality/value The study presents a theoretical framework that ranks the factors behind IT employee burnout due to aggressive AI adoption. Additionally, the study's insights could help IT and human resources (HR) leadership implement transparent workload policies to create a healthy work environment. The study is one of the first to apply GINA through the lens of TOE in a techno-managerial scenario. It extends burnout theorization from individual-level stressors to a TOE-based workplace environment.
