Clarifying the concept of data privacy within the Chinese legislative framework is essential for refining its academic and practical applications. Using Walker and Avant’s concept analysis, this study examines pertinent Chinese legal texts related to privacy, information, and data to develop a comprehensive definition of data privacy. The analysis reveals the multidimensional aspects of data privacy, elucidating its intricate relationship with both data and privacy, which is crucial for effective information management, user privacy protection, and ethical data practices in various information-related fields. Data privacy is characterised as a critical nexus between data and privacy, emerging from the datafication of privacy and the privatisation of data. Its manifestations vary according to different application contexts, aiming to protect personal property interests in sensitive data while advocating for digital privacy to uphold individual dignity. The resulting framework directs international research on data privacy by delineating parameters that encourage interdisciplinary dialogue and innovation across multiple sectors, including but not limited to information services and policy. Enhanced clarity in the concepts of data privacy strengthens individual autonomy, informs best practices in information governance, and contributes to global discussions on data privacy strategies relevant to the library and information science field and beyond.
