Vibration condition-based fault diagnosis (VCBFD) is essential in ensuring the reliability and safety of rotating machinery. With the rapid evolution of this field, a vast number of publications encompassing both theory and industrial applications have emerged, so it is necessary to grasp the latest research development. This paper attempts to provide an overview of recent advancements in VCBFD for rotating machinery and offer potential future directions. Initially, to grasp the latest research, a visual analysis of VCBFD research is presented using CiteSpace to conduct mapping knowledge domains. Then, a concise introduction outlines the fault characteristics of three primary components of rotating machinery. Subsequently, the theory and applications of conventional signal processing techniques as well as the applications of intelligent fault diagnosis are conducted. Furthermore, the advantages, limitations, and performance evaluation standards of the presented approaches are tabulated. Finally, the major difficulties and potential directions for future research are discussed.
