Despite increasing cultural diversity in elected politics, minorities’ political representation is still lacking in national elections. To better understand how the news media covers minority candidates, this research analyzed news coverage of Francia Márquez, the first Afro-Colombian female presidential candidate in the 2022 Colombian election, who later became vice president. To provide a more comprehensive understanding of coverage, this study features a content analysis of news articles from six Colombian news entities. Results revealed the news heavily emphasized Márquez’s gender, race, class, and activism within the context of intercultural media representation. Further, analysis showed that when Márquez was achieving electoral success, the news produced comparatively more delegitimizing coverage, reflecting potential cultural biases in political media narratives.
