Symptomatic Chinese patients in the 2012-2015 cohort had a lower carotid plaque burden and volume percentage of lipid-rich necrotic core compared to the 2002-2005 cohort (P<0.001).
Why the study?
To compare the morphological and compositional characteristics of carotid plaques between 2002-2005 and 2012-2015 cohorts of Chinese patients using magnetic resonance vessel wall imaging.
Do the morphological and compositional characteristics of carotid plaques differ in symptomatic patients between 2012-2015 and 2002-2005 cohorts?

Do the morphological and compositional characteristics of carotid plaques differ in symptomatic patients between 2012-2015 and 2002-2005 cohorts?
Symptomatic carotid plaques in a recent Chinese cohort (2012-2015) showed lower severity and vulnerability compared to an older cohort (2002-2005) on magnetic resonance vessel wall imaging.

Recent cohorts show lower carotid plaque burden and LRNC; hypothesis-generating for temporal shifts in Chinese patients, prospective confirmation needed.
OBJECTIVE: To compare the morphological and compositional characteristics of carotid plaques in two cohorts (2002-2005 and 2012-2015) of Chinese patients using magnetic resonance vessel wall imaging. METHODS: Symptomatic patients with carotid atherosclerotic plaques who underwent carotid vessel wall magnetic resonance imaging between 2002-2005 and 2012-2015 were retrospectively recruited. Plaque morphology [including mean wall area, wall thickness, and maximum normalized wall index (NWI)] and composition [including calcification, intraplaque hemorrhage, and lipid-rich necrotic core (LRNC)] in symptomatic carotid arteries were evaluated and compared between patients in these two time periods. CONCLUSIONS: Patients in the 2012-2015 cohort had a lower plaque burden and volume percentages of LRNC in symptomatic carotid arteries than those in the 2002-2005 cohort. These findings indicate that carotid plaques in the recent cohort had a lower severity and vulnerability.

Lu et al. (2021) conducted a cohort in Symptomatic carotid atherosclerotic plaques. 2012-2015 time period vs. 2002-2005 time period was evaluated on Plaque morphology (mean wall area, wall thickness, maximum NWI) and composition (calcification, intraplaque hemorrhage, LRNC) (p=<0.001). Symptomatic Chinese patients in the 2012-2015 cohort had a lower carotid plaque burden and volume percentage of lipid-rich necrotic core compared to the 2002-2005 cohort (P<0.001).
