This study aims to assess whether N-acetylcysteine can prevent diaphragmatic dysfunction caused by controlled mechanical ventilation.
Randomized, controlled experiment with male Wistar rats.
Rats were subjected to either spontaneous breathing with N-acetylcysteine or saline, or controlled mechanical ventilation with N-acetylcysteine or saline for 24 hours.
Diaphragmatic force production, oxidative stress markers, and proteolytic activity were measured.
Diaphragmatic force was significantly lower in saline-treated mechanical ventilation group (p < .01).
N-acetylcysteine abolished the diaphragmatic contractile dysfunction caused by mechanical ventilation.
Oxidative stress markers increased significantly in saline group but were prevented by N-acetylcysteine.
