Electrochemical transformation is relevant in fields like synthesis, energy storage, analytical detection, and mimicking metabolic and environmental conversion processes. Mass spectrometry aids in understanding and optimizing these systems by providing information about intermediates and final transformation products. This review critically discusses applications of mass spectrometry and hyphenated techniques for identifying electrochemical transformation products, focusing on non-volatile products in solution or precipitated on/adsorbed to electrode surfaces. Detailed discussions cover the simulation of biotransformation processes during metabolic and environmental conversion. A comprehensive summary of xenobiotics studied by electrochemistry-mass spectrometry, grouped by the observed biomimetic reactions, is provided. Surface-sensitive mass spectrometry is discussed for analyzing precipitated and adsorbed products on electrodes, relevant to energy storage and electro-synthesis. This review emphasizes the advantages of combining mass spectrometric analysis with electrochemical systems, aiming to make electrochemistry accessible to analytical chemists and demonstrate the capabilities of mass spectrometry to experienced electrochemists.
