This paper describes a model for preoperative augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) intervention for patients with planned admissions to the intensive care unit following surgery that render them temporarily unable to speak. Details of preoperative and postoperative interventions and discharge interviews are provided, along with strategies for patientdirected vocabulary selection and digital voice message banking. Anecdotal data present the benefits of preoperative introduction to AAC, as described by patients, family members, and medical staff.
