Abstract

Squeeze out the water! Chiral phosphoric acid catalyzed tandem double Friedel–Crafts reactions between indoles and 2-formylbiphenyls were realized under mild conditions. The 9-(3-indolyl)fluorene derivatives were obtained in good yields and up to 96 % ee, leaving water as the sole by-product (see scheme).
