Categorical pedagogy makes a practice’s ontological concepts (part/whole, cause/effect, structure/function) explicit, enabling students to reason with them rather than guess. Its lineage runs from Aristotle’s Categories, through Cicero’s loci communes and the medieval quaestio, to modern Social Realism’s emphasis on powerful knowledge, conceptual coherence, and hierarchical structure. In the sixteenth century, Petrus Ramus refined this tradition: he compressed medieval analytical frameworks into nine systematic prompts and imposed a rule of binary division, producing single-page charts students could master – a breakthrough in epistemological access. This paper demonstrates Ramus’s pedagogical mechanism in action through two parallel analyses. First, it examines a contemporary vocational education lesson on timber roof trusses, showing how it relies on categorical reasoning. Second, it reconstructs that same lesson using strict Ramist principles, complete with binary trees and single-page charts, bringing this historical pedagogic practice to life for a modern reader Comparing the actual lesson with its Ramist reconstruction reveals how deliberate categorical work drives vocational learning across centuries. This comparison serves two purposes: it grounds current social realist claims in their deeper intellectual history, and it exposes for contemporary educators both the power and the limits of categorical pedagogy – showing where it succeeds and where it historically overreached.
