Water quality loss in the Canadian Prairies Cale Gushulak from the University of Manitoba discusses the significant challenges related to water quality loss in the Canadian Prairies, a region facing severe water security threats due to agricultural expansion and climate change. Canada holds around 20% of the world's freshwater. In total, this constitutes approximately 9% of the country’s area. While this abundance of water has created the perception that Canada is water-rich, much of this freshwater is in the country's geographically remote, sparsely populated northern regions, where it is largely inaccessible. In addition, much of the water near population centers in southern Canada is not quickly replenished. These factors reduce Canada’s renewable freshwater resources to about 7% of the world's renewable water. (1)
