This analysis investigates the revolutionary journey of Alfaro Vive Carajo in Ecuador, highlighting transnational influences on its evolution.
The following paper analyses, from a transnational perspective, the origins and evolution of the Ecuadorian guerrilla group Alfaro Vive Carajo (1983–1991). As proven by extensive documentary research and in‐depth interviews with well‐known members of this armed organisation, its revolutionary project cannot be fully understood without also comprehending the influences and adaptations that came from Nicaragua, Colombia and Uruguay from the late 1970s onwards. This highlights the importance of transnational approaches to enrich the study and understanding of a deeply heterogeneous, plural and changing Latin American guerrilla phenomenology, highly dependent on the geopolitical coordinates of the moment.
