Case report shows effective appendectomy and mesh repair for Amyand's hernia, suggesting new management strategies.
Amyand's hernia is an uncommon variant of inguinal hernia characterized by the presence of the vermiform appendix within the hernia sac. It accounts for approximately 1% of all inguinal hernias, whereas acute appendicitis occurring inside the hernia sac is reported in only 0.08–0.13% of cases. Because of its rarity, preoperative diagnosis is challenging, and there is still controversy regarding the optimal surgical management, particularly concerning the use of prosthetic mesh in the presence of appendiceal inflammation.
