Severe hyponatremia from beer potomania is linked to reversible Takotsubo cardiomyopathy.
Why the study?
Takotsubo cardiomyopathy is often associated with acute emotional stress, and this report reviews beer potomania-induced hyponatremia as a trigger.
Case Report (n=1)
No
Severe hyponatremia from beer potomania can precipitate Takotsubo cardiomyopathy, which typically resolves after correction of sodium levels and standard supportive care.
Hyponatremia from beer potomania may trigger reversible Takotsubo cardiomyopathy; this single case leaves open causality and should not yet change practice.
Takotsubo cardiomyopathy (TC), an acute cardiac event is often associated with acute emotional stress, usually in the setting of cardiovascular risk factors. This case report attempts to review one of the triggers of TC beer potomania-induce hyponatremia with imaging findings that shows the link between severe hyponatremia and TC.

Dodoo et al. (2022) conducted a case report in Takotsubo cardiomyopathy and severe hyponatremia (n=1). Severe hyponatremia (beer potomania) was evaluated on Development and resolution of Takotsubo cardiomyopathy. Severe hyponatremia from beer potomania was associated with the development of Takotsubo cardiomyopathy (LVEF 30%), which recovered to LVEF 55% at one month.
