Key result
Transcatheter closure of ventricular septal defects was successfully performed in two high-surgical-risk patients in their 60s with multiple comorbidities, resulting in improved NYHA functional class.
Why the study?
Surgical VSD closure can be complex in patients of advanced age with multiple risk factors including cardiometabolic syndrome.

Transcatheter VSD closure may serve as a viable and effective alternative to surgery for older patients with perimembranous VSDs and high surgical risk due to multiple comorbidities.
Transcatheter VSD closure succeeded in two elderly patients with comorbidities; hypothesis-generating for less invasive options, prospective trials needed before adoption.
A ventricular septal defect (VSD) is the most prevalent congenital heart disease. Some patients who were watched without surgery when they were young need surgery as they age.The surgical approach is the standard treatment and suitable for young age, but it can be complex in these patients of advanced age with multiple risk factors including cardiometabolic syndrome. We present two cases of transcatheter VSD closure that were successful in patients in their 60s who had a variety of comorbidities. For surgically high-risk patients with numerous comorbidities, as in these cases, transcatheter closure can be an alternative.

Kim et al. (2023) conducted a case report in Ventricular septal defect with multiple comorbidities (n=2). Transcatheter VSD closure was evaluated on Procedural success and clinical improvement. Transcatheter closure of ventricular septal defects was successfully performed in two high-surgical-risk patients in their 60s with multiple comorbidities, resulting in improved NYHA functional class.
