A new method of measuring magnetostriction constants in cubic ferromagnetic insulators has been developed and applied to the measurement of certain ferrites and garnets. This method utilizes the fact that the ferromagnetic resonance frequency is stress dependent. Since the magnitude of this stress dependence is determined by the magnetoelastic constants of the material, these constants can be determined by measuring resonance frequency changes induced by known stresses. One of the advantages of this method is that conventional ferromagnetic resonance measurements of the anisotropy constants, g factor, and linewidth can be made simultaneously with the magnetoelastic-constant measurements.
