A methylcholanthrene-induced tumor in mice was used to demonstrate the feasibility of detecting and sorting tumor cells based on DNA content. These separations were accomplished with sufficient preservation of cytologic detail to permit visual identification. It was demonstrated that leukocytes can be distinguished from tumor cells. Furthermore, tumor cells could be detected at the 1% level in this model system. The applicability of this approach to the diagnosis of human tumors was discussed.
