Information about breastfeeding, both in pregnancy and after the birth of the baby, comes from a variety of sources. This article is based on a qualitative research study which draws on the breastfeeding experiences of thirty women. The analysis centres around three important and influential sources of information for breastfeeding women: media constructs of breastfeeding, antenatal classes and women with previous experience of breastfeeding. Many women feel the realitity of breastfeeding is different to their expectations. Health professionals are well placed to support and encourage the development of strategies which support breastfeeding, e.g. peer learning and self-help groups.
