Assesses psychometric properties of the Schutte Emotional Intelligence Scale in students, indicating instrument quality issues.
Students frequently encounter various challenges, making emotional intelligence a crucial factor in effective decision-making. One widely used tool to assess emotional intelligence is the Schutte Emotional Intelligence Scale (SEIS), which has been adapted from 33 to 28 items for the Indonesian context. This study evaluates the psychometric properties of the Indonesian SEIS using the Rasch model (version 3.73). Participants were current undergraduate students in Yogyakarta. The study examined the reliability and validity of the scale at both the instrument and item levels. Results indicate that the Indonesian SEIS demonstrated solid psychometric qualities. However, two items within the same construct were difficult for respondents to interpret or endorse. Some items showed bias and may require revision. Simplifying the rating scale and conducting further testing are also recommended to improve the instrument’s quality.
