This randomized trial demonstrates a novel air-to-water generator’s effectiveness in arid regions, highlighting its potential for emergency water access.
Abstract—The increasing global water crisis, especially in arid and semi-arid regions, demands innovative, sustainable, and affordable solutions for clean water access. This projectpresents the design and development of a portable Air-to-Water Generator (AWG) that extractsHigh Technology Lettersdrinking water directly from atmospheric humidity using a hybrid condensation-absorptionsystem. The core mechanism involves drawing humid air through a hydrogel-based desiccantfilter, which captures moisture even at low relative humidity levels. The absorbed moisture isthen released through a low-energy heating process and condensed into liquid water using aPeltier-based cooling system. The collected water undergoes UV-C sterilization and carbonfiltration to ensure safety and palatability. The system is primarily solar-powered, making it suitable for off-grid deployment and emergency situations. This combination of desiccant-based moisture capture and thermoelectric cooling enhances water yield while minimizing energy consumption, especially in areas where conventional AWG systems fail due to lowhumidity. This innovation outperforms traditional AWG technologies by operating efficientlyin low-humidity environments, consuming minimal energy, and maintaining portability. Itsapplication potential spans disaster relief, rural water access, and military or campingscenarios, making it not only technologically significant but also socially impactful.
