Shows improved student engagement and learning in organic chemistry, highlighting pedagogical value.
This study developed and provided initial evidence on the use of an environmental justice-integrated learning packet in organic chemistry. The instructional material was evaluated using a multidimensional framework assessing accuracy, inclusivity, instructional effectiveness, and usability, as well as its potential to promote skills development and civic responsibility. Results indicated high expert ratings across all evaluation dimensions. Student data showed positive trends in engagement and improvements in pre- to post-test scores, as analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test (Z = −2.94, p = 0.003), with a large effect size (r = 0.849). While these findings suggest the potential pedagogical value of integrating environmental justice into organic chemistry, the results should be interpreted as preliminary and context-specific. This study contributes a validated instructional resource and offers initial insights into how socially relevant contexts may support student engagement and learning in chemistry.
