This article investigates the complex interplay of animism, ancestor veneration, and ritual practices among Nigeria's indigenous populations. Although only approximately 6% of Nigerians currently identify exclusively with indigenous religions, research indicates that more than half the population participates in rituals or festivals rooted in traditional beliefs, irrespective of formal religious affiliation (Pew Research Center, 2010a; Hackett, 1991; Chitando & Adogame, 2016). Sacred groves maintained for religious purposes constitute up to 30% of forest reserves in certain regions (Izugbara, 2007:55). Rather than adopting a reductionist perspective that dismisses these traditions as superstition, this article foregrounds the philosophical sophistication, ecological awareness, and social cohesion inherent in Nigeria’s indigenous religions. It analyzes how animism, defined as the belief in the spiritual inhabitation of natural entities, informs reciprocal relationships between humans and the environment. It examines ancestor worship as a mechanism for sustaining lineage identity and community stability through participatory rituals. The article further considers the challenges posed by colonialism, the expansion of Christianity and Islam, and ongoing globalization, all of which threaten to erode sacred knowledge and practices. Nevertheless, the resilience of indigenous religious systems is demonstrated by their capacity for syncretism and cultural adaptation. Recent scholarship by Olupona (2014), Obadare (2022), and Wariboko (2014) underscores the continued vitality and adaptive strategies of indigenous religious communities in Nigeria. The article argues that Nigerian indigenous religions offer essential perspectives on contemporary debates over environmental stewardship, cultural heritage, and pluralistic policy, underscoring the importance of incorporating indigenous voices into national discourse.
