Evaluates immersive platform's effectiveness on understanding smart readiness in buildings, indicating significant user improvement.
This paper presents the design, development, and initial evaluation of the SRI XR platform, an integrated digital environment for the education and assessment of the Smart Readiness Indicator (SRI) in buildings. Introduced by the European Union, the SRI evaluates a building’s ability to respond intelligently to user needs, energy grids, and environmental conditions. However, its current implementation relies primarily on static, spreadsheet-based tools, requiring specialized expertise and limiting widespread adoption. To address these challenges, the SRI XR platform integrates Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), and Artificial Intelligence (AI) into a unified, interactive learning and assessment ecosystem. The platform includes AR-based educational scenarios, an interactive SRI Calculator for real-time evaluation, a VR simulation enabling immersive building inspections, and an AI-powered assistant (SUNDAY) providing real-time guidance. An interdisciplinary development approach combining energy engineering, XR technologies, and human–computer interaction was adopted. The system was evaluated through a structured questionnaire involving mechanical engineering students and professionals. The results indicate high usability and user acceptance, with mean scores of 4.75/5 for usability, 4.82/5 for supporting SRI understanding, and 4.89/5 for overall user experience. Approximately 90% of participants reported a strong improvement in their understanding of the SRI, while more than 92% evaluated AR-based learning as more effective than traditional methods. From a technical perspective, the platform demonstrated stable real-time performance (>60 FPS in VR) and high reliability, with no reported crashes during deployment. By transforming a static assessment process into an experiential workflow, the platform enhances methodological accessibility and supports improved user understanding of the SRI. Beyond its educational role, SRI XR also functions as a decision-support and awareness tool, facilitating communication between technical experts, policymakers, and non-expert users. The study thus introduces a novel approach for integrating XR and AI technologies into energy performance assessment, contributing to the broader adoption of smart and energy-efficient building practices.
