Randomized trial examines factors influencing sustainable business model innovation in Vietnam, suggesting implications for policy and practice.
This study examined the mutual dependence between the quality of digital infrastructure, the use of AI-powered decision support, knowledge governance systems and entrepreneurial learning behaviour that foster sustainable business model innovation (SBMI) among business enterprises in Vietnam. Using the Resource-Based View, Knowledge-Based View, and Institutional Theory frameworks, this study suggested an exhaustive structural model based on the data on 500 organisational leaders in the country. Partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) was used to test the hypothesized relationships. Results showed advanced digital infrastructure and AI-powered decision support systems significantly increased the organisational learning ability, which functions as a direct facilitator and to some extent mediator of sustainable innovation. Entrepreneurial learning behaviour and knowledge governance are found significantly direct and indirect affecting learning capability. Further, institutional support on innovation strengthenedthe positive relationship between learning capability and SBMI, highlighting the importance of an enabling policy environment. Overall, the findings reveal that the firms need to coordinate technological, cognitive, and institutional resources to achieve sustainability-oriented transformation. This study provides immense theoretical and practical implications, in promoting a sustainable business innovation in Vietnam, and opens new avenues for future cross-sectoral and longitudinal research.
