Conceptual paper argues for a focus on critical analytical thinking in higher education amid AI advancements.
Artificial intelligence is fundamentally transforming the role of higher education. As access to information becomes increasingly immediate and inexpensive, universities can no longer define their mission primarily as the transmission of knowledge. This conceptual paper argues that the future of higher education should be centered on developing critical analytical thinking. Rather than focusing solely on what students know, universities should cultivate the ability to question assumptions, evaluate evidence, recognize cognitive biases, assess the reliability of information, and make responsible decisions in collaboration with artificial intelligence. The paper examines this transformation from educational, scientific, economic, and societal perspectives. It discusses how curricula, assessment methods, academic culture, and the role of faculty members may evolve in response to the opportunities and challenges created by AI. This work is intended as a conceptual contribution to the ongoing international discussion on the future of universities, AI literacy, and human-centered higher education.
