Taxonomic revision identifies four new Nuglerus species and describes larval features, indicating biodiversity in the Oriental region.
Nuglerus Navás, 1912 is a rare Oriental genus of the antlion subfamily Dendroleontinae, previously including only three species: N. maculatus (Navás, 1915), N. pustulatus (McLachlan, 1867) and N. scalaris Navás, 1912. Based on the examination of types and additional material, together with COI barcode sequencing for some specimens, we revise here the taxonomy of Nuglerus . We treat N. scalaris syn. nov . as a junior synonym of the Sri Lankan species N. pustulatus ; restore the Philippine species N. insignis Banks, 1939, stat. rev ., which was previously considered a junior synonym of N. maculatus ; and transfer Acratoleon dispar Banks, 1934 endemic to Borneo (Malaysia) to Nuglerus as a new combination, i.e., N. dispar comb. nov . In addition, we describe four new species: N. guimaraesae Zheng, Badano & Liu, sp. nov . from southern India, N. maizuqii Zheng, Badano & Liu, sp. nov . from Malay Peninsula, N. ruzzieri Badano, Zheng & Liu, sp. nov . from Sulawesi (Indonesia), N. shihongliangi Zheng, Badano & Liu, sp. nov . from Bali (Indonesia). Moreover, we describe the larval morphology and ecology of Nuglerus for the first time. So far, Nuglerus comprises eight species, patchily distributed in tropical rainforests of the Oriental Region. We also provide a distribution map and an identification key for Nuglerus and discuss the affinities issues of this genus.
