This review details radiographic techniques for diagnosing orthopaedic carpus issues in dogs and cats, suggesting improved diagnostic accuracy.
Radiography of the carpus is an important tool in the diagnosis of orthopaedic conditions affecting the carpus of dogs and cats. A good understanding of the complex carpal anatomy will enable the clinician to interpret radiographs obtained. Orthogonal radiographs, as well as radiographs of the contralateral limb for comparison, provide a useful starting point. Further information about the specific location and magnitude of the problem can be obtained with the addition of oblique and stressed radiographic views of the carpus. Common orthopaedic problems of the carpus include hyperextension injury, ligament sprains, fractures of the carpal bones and osteoarthritis of the carpus.
