Developing frameworks to benchmark entrepreneurial tasks assignable to AI, indicating new research pathways.
While benchmarking performance of artificial intelligence (‘AI’) is more commonplace in disciplines oriented towards computer science, there has been little attention paid to the process in an entrepreneurial context. Given the increasing interest in AI in entrepreneurship, this work synthesizes the benchmarking process with an entrepreneurship as design science perspective, addressing the gap between entrepreneurship research on AI and approaches to benchmarking. A prospective framework is presented to help entrepreneurship researchers work through the identification process necessary to build impactful benchmarks in an entrepreneurial context. A systematic literature review surfaces 131 entrepreneurial tasks assignable to AI (ETAs) discussed in articles from relevant entrepreneurship journals. The prospective framework uses the resultant ETAs to illustrate its application to a synthesized benchmarking and entrepreneurship as design science process.
