New species Abscondia gangeticus is identified in India, highlighting biodiversity and ecological insights.
A new firefly species, Abscondia gangeticus sp. n., specimens of which were collected from two major ecoregions of West Bengal, India, is described. The genus Abscondita is exclusively known from Southeast and South Asian countries and comprises 10 species, including the new one described here. Three species of Abscondita from India have been reported to date, and we herein present the fourth species. Specimens of the new species were collected from marshy lands and areas near water bodies at various locations within the two ecoregions of West Bengal, India, the Lower Gangetic Plains Moist Deciduous Forests and the Sundarbans Freshwater Swamp Forests. The new species is presented with a diagnosis, description, photographs of the adult male including genitalia, and female specimens, along with its distribution and biogeographic remarks, and concise information about its natural history. A modified key to all known species of Abscondita and a revised Indian checklist are also provided.http://www.zoobank.org/urn:lsid:zoobank.org:pub:01B200CF-BE24-4884-9905-C79177D2BD39
