Survey captures higher disability prevalence in Middle East and North Africa, indicating potential underreporting in official statistics.
This article reports survey questions capturing disability in a multi-topic household survey for general populations in the Middle East and North Africa. The results suggest that the survey predicted a higher prevalence of disability compared to estimates based on official statistics. Acknowledging that the “true” level of disability remains unknown without linking administrative health care data, we are confident that the questions accurately captured prevalence, nature, and severity of disability at household level in a region challenged by unrest, lack of infrastructure and democracy.
