Purpose This study aims to investigate the factors determining potential users’ acceptance of waqf-based qardhul hassan financing in Sabah, Malaysia. Design/methodology/approach Using theory of consumption value (TCV) model, this study conducted quantitative research involving a total of 845 respondents who were willing to accept the facility. They were potential users for the said facility. The data obtained were statistically analysed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). Findings The results reported significant effects of emotional value, epistemic value, conditional value, functional value and social value on potential users’ acceptance. Research limitations/implications The results obtained were limited to five main districts in Sabah: Kota Kinabalu, Ranau, Sandakan, Keningau and Tawau which may affect their generalisability and application. The usefulness of the results was confined to specific geographical locations in Sabah, Malaysia, limiting the generalisability of the results. Besides, this study used TCV to study the potential users’ acceptance in which different findings are expected if different theories are used. Practical implications This study enhanced the theoretical and practical effects of TCV model. The results offer a guide for the Sabah waqf institution to develop waqf-based qardhul hassan financing, where donors are brought into play. Social implications The analysis of the user acceptance study on the waqf-based qardhul hassan financing product in Sabah provides valuable information about the tendency and perception of the Muslim community in Sabah towards the practice of waqf for the convenience of the qardhul hassan waqf-based financing product in an effort to develop the strength of activities such as the ummah’s economic sector. In turn, it can be employed as the baseline theory for future studies to enhance existing hypotheses. Originality/value This study introduced a frame that work for Qardhul Hassan Financing Product based on Waqf in Sabah, Malaysia.
