Examines technological pathways and collaborative roles in sustainable aviation fuel development between Australia and China, suggesting further global cooperation is essential.
This study develops a text-mining pipeline as a content analysis tool, integrating named entity recognition, co-occurrence network analysis, and thematic classification to examine 203 sustainable aviation fuel (SAF)-related news articles curated by the International Civil Aviation Organisation between June and December 2025. The analysis identifies emerging industry trends and is further contextualised through a timely Australia–China case study. News coverage indicates that hydrotreated esters and fatty acids (HEFA) derived from used cooking oil is the most frequently discussed technological pathway, while hydrogen is the most central entity in the co-occurrence network, with SAF coverage broadening from early adopters to emerging regions. The case study highlights complementary roles, with Australia supplying feedstock and China contributing technological capabilities, supported by joint certification, co-investment, and workforce development initiatives. Overall, the findings underscore the importance of global cooperation in accelerating SAF deployment, and demonstrate the value of grey literature as a timely and policy-relevant data source.
