Planned scoping review synthesizes management and monitoring of intrinsic capacity deficits in WHO ICOPE programs.
Why the study?
Literature has focused disproportionately on ICOPE Steps 1-2, leaving a dearth in synthesizing details of Steps 3-4 and the post-assessment management linking deficit detection to outcomes.
This scoping review aims to synthesize information on the management of intrinsic capacity deficits following assessment in WHO ICOPE programs to inform implementation across different care models.

Scoping review exposes gap in ICOPE Steps 3-4 synthesis; leaves open how assessment links to effective management.
This scoping review will be conducted systematically to synthesise information on the management of IC deficits following assessment in ICOPE programmes implemented across the world. A disproportionate amount of literature on IC/ICOPE has been on ICOPE Steps 1-2 and health outcomes. There’s a dearth in the synthesis of the details of Steps 3-4, including the management of ICOPE programmes that links detection of deficits to outcomes. The information could encompass interventions delivered for each IC domain with deficit, referral pathways, care plans, follow-up and monitoring approaches, follow through rates, and healthcare professionals involved in IC management and monitoring. Broadly, this project informs ICOPE implementation, and how IC deficits can be better managed across different care models and health systems.

Sum et al. (2026) conducted a review in Intrinsic capacity deficits. WHO ICOPE post-assessment management and monitoring was evaluated on Management of intrinsic capacity deficits (ICOPE Steps 3-4). This planned scoping review will synthesize information on the management and monitoring of intrinsic capacity deficits in WHO ICOPE programmes to inform future implementation.
