Scholarship reveals advances and ongoing challenges in college and career readiness for English learners, suggesting pathways for future research.
Scholarship on English learners' college and career readiness has made significant progress over the past 15 years or so, and this Special Issue is a good example of the latest research in this area. In this afterword, I first discuss four developments as evidenced in the Special Issue articles: (a) the use of richly varied theoretical frameworks, (b) progress in qualitative inquiry, (c) a broader scope of both grade spans and stakeholders, and (d) an emphasis on solutions. I then identify questions and issues that remain understudied and that we, as a group of scholars committed to ELs' equitable access to postsecondary education and career pathways, must collectively explore further, including (a) interrogating the concept of college and career readiness itself and (b) identifying and building systemic solutions.
