Examines vocabulary retention in secondary students using mobile apps, suggesting integration with traditional methods enhances learning.
This study explores the nature of vocabulary acquisition and retention in second language learning, with a focus on the effectiveness of mobile-assisted vocabulary learning among secondary school students in the Namangan region of Uzbekistan. Drawing on theoretical models of memory and vocabulary learning strategies, the research compares traditional textbook-based methods with mobile applications such as Quizlet, Memrise, and Mondly. Using a mixed-methods approach involving pre- and post-tests, surveys, and interviews, the study found that students using mobile apps demonstrated significantly higher vocabulary retention rates (76%) compared to those using traditional methods (45%). Additionally, mobile-assisted learning increased learner motivation and engagement due to interactive and gamified features. The findings suggest that integrating mobile technology into English language teaching can substantially enhance vocabulary acquisition and long-term retention. Recommendations include curriculum integration of mobile platforms and targeted teacher training to maximize pedagogical benefits.
