A ferrous iron transport system in <it>Escherichia coli</it> is described. Mutants in this transport system were isolated using the antibiotic streptonigrin. The gene locus <it>feo</it> (for <it>fe</it>rr<it>o</it>us iron transport) was mapped near <it>pncA</it> at 38.5 min on the genetic map of <it>E. coli</it> K12. The transport of ferrous iron was regulated by <it>fur</it> as the siderophore transport systems.
