The electronic dipole polarizabilities αd of the alkali atoms have been calculated by a method in which the inhomogeneous Schr\"odinger equation for the dipole perturbation u₁^'(ns→p) of the valence electron wave function is solved directly. The theoretical results for αd are in reasonably good agreement with the observed values from two recent experiments.
