A method for determining isotacticity of polypropylene is proposed, which is based on the measurement of the ratio of the optical density of the 1000 (isotactic) and 1460 cm. −1 (“internal” standard) bands ( D 1000 : D 1460 ). The method has been compared with the extraction method and the other infrared methods. It has been shown that the other infrared methods are unreliable, either because of the failure of the 975 cm. −1 band to behave as a true “internal” thickness band, or because of the wrong assignment of the isotactic band.
