Software toolbox integrates Herbie with sensor data streams, enhancing metadata management and analysis.
This document describes the development of a software toolbox for connecting Herbie instances with sensor data streams and sensor management systems. The developed toolbox, referred to as the moin4herbie toolkit, was created within Work Package 5, "Integration of Herbie metadata in sensor data streams." The moin4herbie toolkit includes two complementary modules that complete the metadata exchange workflow. The RDF2Registry module retrieves maintenance and operational metadata recorded in Herbie through SPARQL queries, maps the retrieved information to standardized controlled vocabularies, and synchronizes the resulting metadata back into the O2A Registry using REST APIs. The Registry2STA module transforms sensor, platform, and event metadata stored in the O2A Registry into the OGC SensorThings API (STA) standard using FROST-Server, enabling metadata and activity information to be propagated into downstream observation data streams. This document describes the complete workflow for retrieving operational and maintenance metadata from Herbie, mapping and synchronizing this information with the O2A Registry, and transforming the resulting metadata into SensorThings API-compatible interfaces for integration with sensor observation services.MOIN4Herbie is funded 2024-2026 by the Initiative and Networking Fund of the Helmholtz Association (Helmholtz Metadata Collaboration HMC, Project Cohort 2023).
