A population of 15,500 snuff-users was observed by cytological, histological, and visual means. Only two carcinomas of the oral cavity were found. We feel that snuff use per se cannot logically be considered as carcinogenic in view of the large number of patients that have used snuff for many years with no clinical or histological evidence of tissue change. Our animal studies do not implicate snuff or chewing tobacco as carcinogens.
