An apparatus is described which records the stresses occurring in evaporated thin films during the deposition process. The effect of the variation of the deposition parameters on the stress in films of silicon monoxide is investigated and results are found to be in general agreement with those of previous workers. The conditions necessary for the production of stable films are defined.
