Optical absorption spectra of helium implanted InP single crystals are measured in the photon energy range from 0.9 to 1.3 eV. It is found that helium implantation gives rise to exponential absorption tails below the fundamental edge. The absorption coefficients as well as the characteristic tailing energy increase with increasing fluence.
